Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my FITBIT calories show up differently on the Weightless Platform as compared to the calories that show up on the Fitbit app or website ?

Dear Weightless Supporters,

Thank you very much for your support of this movement and you burning calories for this cause. The focus is the cause. The goal is to do our best to help build healthier communities and feed the hungry.

While we are doing this , we want to ensure that the credibility of the calorie aggregation is maintained and we are transparent to the people who are pledging their support by converting these calories into actual cash dollars $

As a correlation exercise, we had the same individual , do the same activity while wearing both devices , the jawbone and fitbit, and check how best we can ensure the relative values do not have a skew.

We noticed that the Fitbit calorie burn and jawbone calorie burn is reflected differently in terms of total calories burnt (which could be an accumulation of Activity Calories, Calories BMR, Calories Out, Marginal Calories etc)

In order to ensure we are conservative and credible in our approach to this accumulation of calories , we have decided to take the calorie count which is burnt during actually activity which is considered equivalent/comparable  to exercising.

Therefore we take a count which is derived by the formulae : Weightless Calories = Active calories * {(sum of active exercise minutes)/(sum of activity minutes)}

This is explained further below.

As we see , the graph shows us the total activity , as well as a break-up of the minutes when the user was sedentary, lightly active , fairly active and very active.

From the parameters that the Fitbit APP provides , we capture these values :

  <summary>
         <activityCalories>[value]
         <fairlyActiveMinutes>[value]
        <lightlyActiveMinutes>[value]
        <veryActiveMinutes>[value]

We then apply the formula :

Weightless Calories  =  Activity calories *  { (very active + fairly active)/ (very active + fairly active+ lightly active)}
We see that the accumulated calories are rather close to each of the device values and would average out over the spread of the month’s activity

Fitbit
{"calories":"1252","fairly":"74","very":"20","lightly":"254","effective_burn":338},"2013-12-15":
{"calories":"914","fairly":"59","very":"3","lightly":"211","effective_burn":207},"2013-12-16":
{"calories":"1145","fairly":"87","very":"8","lightly":"235","effective_burn":329},"2013-12-17":
{"calories":"1381","fairly":"96","very":"54","lightly":"155","effective_burn":679},"2013-12-18":
Total for 4 days = 1553
Jawbone
2013-12-15 :"320.559",
2013-12-16 : "259.382"
2013-12-17 : "586.600",
2013-12-18 : "292.930",
Total for 4 days = 1457

Therefore we had to apply the correction factors across the collated calories and you would have found a difference in the readings.

Happy exercising and enjoy burning your calories. The movement shall ensure that the right people will benefit from your efforts Thank you very much and appreciate all your support and efforts

Donations for the Weightless Project

Currently the device companies are pledging money and based on the calories burnt , that is underwritten to dollars which is given to a foundation to enable the cause of hunger eradication .

The device companies are slated to give the conversion equivalent money to the calories collected directly to the foundation. The proof of the money used for a just cause and reporting of usage of funds etc is accurately documented and shared with the donors.

This is expected by the second week of Jan 2014. The money is not given to the platform.

For the relief of typhoon in Philippines, the fitbit and jawbone device companies are going to transfer the money directly to the Deepak Chopra foundation.

The foundation will then work with the Red cross or red cross recommended foundation at philippines and ensure the food distribution and enablement for hunger related forums is established.

All pictures, related details and break up of the money used shall be put up on the website when the foundation completes the task by end of Jan 2014.

Request you to please bear with us until then.

The aim is to maximise the money for the needy by bringing in efficiencies too. Reporting for customized feedback on the activities , shall be reported via the platform to the group who is underwriting the calories . We have reporting mechanisms and notifications in place.

We are open to associating with any number of partners to spread this movement globally. From Jan 2014, we shall have multiple donors, contributors, individuals , corporate, groups and we shall work with other causes and foundations

As the movement gains momentum, individuals and more foundations will be associated and will contribute by donation/pledge to make this cause truly successful.

Thank you for your support and please continue with the burning of calories to make a positive difference

What other devices will you be adding to the list?

We are working on including many more devices and apps as well , for example …Nike Fuel , Shine , Body media , Whithings etc and apps such as Moves, RunKeeper, Endo Mondo . We want to have a global diaspora of users on the platform and it keeps track of calorie contribution irrespective of the geographical location with simple enabled devices and user friendly apps.

How much of each $1 I earn per 1000 calories goes to directly getting food in a hungry persons mouth? Will there be reporting on this down the road?

The focus is the cause. The goal is to do our best to help build healthier communities and feed the hungry. Other than small administration costs , the aim is to maximise the money for the needy by bringing in efficiencies too. Reporting for customized feedback on the activities , shall be reported via the platform to the group who is underwriting the calories . We have reporting mechanisms and notifications in place.

The website mentions helping the Philippines. What other areas of the globe will this go to?

We are open to associating with any number of partners to spread this movement globally.

Who actually manages the money earned thru this program? Happy or the Chopkra foundation?

For the relief at Philippines, the money is collectively managed by the weightless platform, the donor who is contributing the money and the foundations who look at last mile implementation . From Jan 2014, we shall have multiple donors, contributors and we shall work with other causes and foundations

As the program grows, will we be able to have a little fun and competition with this (e.g. seeing top calorie burner(s), challenging each other)?

Absolutely , we shall have user profile pages , community pages , leader boards and other gamification

Who funds the program?

The platform and operational aspects are funded by Happy-Poonacha Machaiah as part of attempt to move the needle on making a positive difference to the cause. Currently, we have device companies who underwrite the calories. As the movement gains momentum, individuals and more foundations will be associated to make this cause truly successful.

What is the radiated EMF influence due to such wearable devices?

Electomagnetic fields (EMFs) are all around us, no matter where you live these days. They emanate from power lines, televisions, household electrical wiring, appliances and microwaves. They come from cell phones, cell phone towers and wireless Internet connections. There are a number of factors that influence the degree to which you may be affected by EMFs.. For example, your body weight, body-mass index, bone density, and water and electrolyte levels can alter the conductivity and biological reactivity to EMFs. Heavy metals in your brain also act as micro-antennas, concentrating and increasing reception of EMF radiation. Electromagnetic radiation emitted from fitness and wellness devices is minimal. Most trackers have a very low power output -less than 1% of the output power in a typical cell phone. It is important to remember that mobile communication devices emit less power when sending signals over shorter distances. In most cases, Wearable Technologies will only be transmitting data from one part of the body to another. This means that the power levels are extremely low, roughly 1/1000th of a mobile phone. Ninety percent of us already carry a mobile phone in our pocket or close to the body all day. It seems reasonable to assume that consumer Wearable Technologies, with smaller communication ranges and hence their considerably lower power levels, carry even less risk than mobile phones. Any new, commercially available product that communicates wirelessly must be rigorously assessed before getting to market, and therefore Wearable Technologies will have a maximum power level comparable to a mobile phone and will generally emit much lower power levels.
